Today I’m taking a sleeper train for 24 hours across Canada, from Halifax NS all the way over to Montreal. I’ll show you what it’s like to live onboard this train, from the dining car, lounge car and even my ensuite private room complete with shower. This is also North America's longest running named train, The Ocean, run by Via Rail- so without any further a do, let's go and get onboard, this iconic train.
    0:00 - Introduction
    1:49 - My Private Room
    4:57 - The dining car
    7:20 - Other classes
    9:42 - Bedtime
    12:15 - Ensuite Shower
    14:27 - Montreal

I have never gone the Halifax through Northern NB route to Montreal but back in the day when we still had VIA Rail in Southern NB I had gone by VIA, (via VIA), from McAdam to Montreal through Maine which was a nice trip. Sadly it has been at least 30 years since that service was offered.

I'm from Halifax and took the same train on the same route in Economy. They call the train "The Renaissance" because I'm sure that's when it was constructed. We somehow managed to get the first two seats in our particular car (Yeah???), so I became well acquainted with my knees, as I saw them all the way there and back, as they were inches from my nose.
I love your pronunciation of Via Rail. "Vie ah" as in "Vaya con Dios". We here on the other side of the pond call it "Vee yah" - as in "Yeah it takes 24 hrs. to get to Montreal and 26 hrs. back" because there is a part of the rail in New Brunswick with only one set of tracks. I took the train with my partner. If you make it there and you aren't divorced it's a good trip.

I moved a couple of years ago; instead of driving to my new home (six hours away), I took my Bengal cat and myself on a VIA rail journey...due to the transfer in Toronto, the journey was longer than six hours...travelled business class on this day journey. The cat travelled amazingly in his carrier, with an occasional cuddle. The crew on the VIA train were amazing, the food was nice...I couldn't have asked for a better moving experience. Thank you VIA. And, thank you Trek for sharing these beautiful train videos. You are awesome.

Finally a video where I can say I've done the exact same thing. Personally, I like the Chateau roomette sleeper rooms more than the room you were in for one simple reason. I was by myself, and the absolute luxury of having that toilet literally right there is impossible to be undersold or oversold. The food was as good as it can be considering the price. Since it's a 24 hour journey, it is absolutely worth the price to be in the sleeper car, the economy is not comfortable at all unless you're on a leg that is considerably shorter than HAL -> MTL. I actually enjoyed the no wifi as it gives me the chance to detox from the internet for a day. Which is something we can all benefit from. I hope you enjoyed Montreal for however much time you spent there.

As a child, I rode the rails with my family from Montreal to the EAST. We had a roomette that slept the 5 of us. Porters made up the beds in the evening - no muss, no fuss. There was a dining car, a bar car. It was just the best way to travel. It seemed so luxurious. I have no idea about the cost. My parents handled that part of it, of course. I do recall that my younger sister and I were sent to the dining car for breakfast ahead of my parents and younger brother. Sis and I had no trouble getting breakfast, simply giving our room number. I fact, I think the other passengers dining at the time were amused by our composure at breakfast.

The proper pronunciation in North America of 'Via' is 'vee-yah'. I once travelled the refurbished classic Silver & Blue scenic train from Vancouver to Toronto many moons ago. It had the famous 'bullet-car' on the tail end. The dining car had the original Art Deco Lalique cut glass booth panels, etched with visages of art from the famous 'Group of Seven' Canadian artists. At that time, the entire passenger train was of the early 1950's stainless steel vintage exterior.

VIA lost access to the Halterm Rail Loop in November of 2020. Since they can't turn the train, and the Park car can't run bi-directionally, it had to go. Yet another sign of VIA's indifference towards its trains.

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas Год назад +1

@@JuanSanchezGuerra I’d heard that rumoured in early 2020 when I took the train. Sad to see it turned into reality.

@@Paul_Lucas It's a massive shame as it was incredibly popular but losing the loop was a inevitability and sadly, CN removed a wye that the train used to use years ago so for the forseeable future, the train has to run with this bidirectional consist sans the Park car. However, many hold hope that eventually, at the very least, a mid train skyline car will be added to replace it

Thanks for watching Paul - and yes sadly so. The staff all seemed upset about the loss of this. Hope they manage to reinstate it / regain access to the turning point

@@Trektrendy Well the turning loop they were using was paved over and is now extra shipping container space so there would need to be a new solution constructed which VIA hasn't got the budget for presently but never say never as they say.

Another great train video from Canada. I've been on VIA too many to list times from Toronto to Ottawa and have been wanting to do both your last videos of one like this one and the RM one you just did. I think you would probably like "The Canadian" which goes from Toronto to Vancouver. One small thing it is VIA (Vee-A) ;) Cannot wait to see your next video. Safe travels

YAYY Via Rail! So glad you dropped by in my country (and city)! Took the Ocean twice from Montreal to Halifax : once in economy (never again!) and once in a roomette. Wasn't there any entertainment on your trip? I hope you can try the Canadian from Toronto all the way to Vancouver! This is quite a 5-day and 4-night journey.

The Canadian is pretty much the only train that has on board entertainment but not sure if they have it at moment due to still being in a pandemic

I am an avid VIA rider, though never been on a ride longer than a couple hours so economy is where I always am. I prefer them over flying or greyhound busses (rip them). neat to see the sleeper side of VIA, though not worth the price IMO but VIA is almost always over priced
